Dravid likely to remain captain

At the end of a long day of infinite rumour and speculation it has emerged that Rahul Dravid is set to stay on as India captain and Ravi Shastri has been offered the role of coach/cricket manager for next month's tour of Bangladesh, sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed to Cricinfo.
The BCCI's high-level meeting at the Wankhede Stadium to discuss India's performance at the World Cup also saw Greg Chappell being offered the post of consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.
In news that has yet to be confirmed it was also learnt that Robin Singh, the former India allrounder, could have a role to play as an assistant or fielding coach. Sources also revealed that while this was the arrangement for the Bangladesh tour, there could be further specific appointments - separate batting, bowling and fielding coaches - with Shastri taking on an overseeing role as cricket manager in the long term.
Shastri has asked the BCCI for a day to clear existing contractual obligations and commitments - he is contracted with ESPN-Star - but did say that it "would be an honour to serve Indian cricket."
"For the years you have played the game and the years you have been part of the media, I do believe I have the experience to contribute," said Shastri. "You are not going to change the team overnight and I do not believe this Indian team can be bad in seven days. I don't think this Indian team can be a very good team in 14 days. There is lot that can be done to make sure that the path is being set for the team to move forward."
All these proposals and/or decisions must be ratified by the working committee, which meets tomorrow, to become effective.
Dravid's decision to accept the captaincy, revealed by sources in the BCCI, sets at rest speculation that he considered giving up the captaincy following India's dismal showing in the World Cup and the subsequent decision of Chappell to not seek an extension of his contract as India coach.
This also puts to rest the strong rumours that the Sachin Tendulkar was likely to make a comeback as captain of the Indian team. Several media outlets have quoted senior players, off the record, as backing Tendulkar to lead the team. There were also suggestions that Tendulkar would meet with Sharad Pawar, the BCCI president, to put forth the grievances of the senior players but that did not materialise.
All through a searingly hot day in Mumbai, the names doing the rounds for various posts changed every hour, as the media, camped out in large numbers outside the Cricket Centre of the BCCI office, clung on to every rumour and every bit of information that filtered through.
In addition to suggestions for having a specific structure of specialised coached assisting the team, it is understood that Dravid also stressed on the need to put other support systems in place. Aside from putting forward his suggestions on what personnel would be ideally suited to take the team forward, Dravid suggested a more streamlined selection process, better team management with the appointment of a full-time team manager and a full-time media manager.
The media release issued by the board only said that Dravid "told the committee that his team has left for the World Cup with high hopes but failed to do well. Rahul accepted responsibility on behalf of the team for the poor performance which led to [an] early exit from the World Cup."
The afternoon session saw seven former captains of India meeting board officials where, it is understood, there was no specific discussion on individual players, the performance of the team in the World Cup or the performance of Chappell as coach. Instead, the captains, who had come to the meeting prepared with a series of points, looked forward to what needed to be done to improve the health of Indian cricket in general.
"This was one of the most constructive meetings I have ever attended with the board," one of the captains told Cricinfo. "We discussed some crucial aspects; one of the keys was strengthening junior cricket. I don't want to give too many specific details, but here's one example: Tiger Pataudi spoke of how players learned how to dive and anticipate in fielding when they were 15, and not 25, so more focus needed to be given to the quality of coaching, umpiring and wickets at that level, so that no aaltu-faltu cricketers come through to the highest level."

Henry injured

But the absence of Henry, who injured stomach and groin muscles on March 7 during Arsenal's 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, is a massive blow for France.

"There is no like-for-like replacement," Domenech said. "I can't say right now whether we'll play with one or two center forwards."

France is tied with Scotland at the top of Group B with nine points each, ahead of World Cup champion Italy.

Although Lithuania has only four points and is in fifth place, Domenech wants a win.

"For the time being, this is our final," Domenech said. "We are playing for qualification for the Euros. It's an important match.

"To qualify, you have to win, and to win you need this spirit," Domenech added. "Qualification won't be easy. We have to turn the page on the World Cup final."

Comments From Indians

Comments From Indians about the todays match,
Do and die for India

Now it’s do and die situation for India tomorrow. India is in a must win situation to go to Super eight. They require to beat Sri lanka on Friday at Trinidad & Tobago, Port of Spain, Oval. All Indian need to show , must show their character tomorrow. They can do it, they can very well do it. They have beaten Sri lanka in the past in India .They need to repeat the same level of competition to win against them.

It’s not easy as Sri lanka knows that India is under pressure. They would like to dominate. Srilanka also won’t like to lose, otherwise they may not go to super eight. India need to repeat their performance in 1999 when they beat them black and blue. Both Dravid and Sourav went on to score big hundred in England. They need to draw inspiration from these games. They have the players who can make that difference. India need to be cool and at the same time does not forget their mission- “ Vision World Cup-2007”.Indian bowlers require to bowl well. They haven’t bowled that well till now barring the practice match against the host when they bowled out West Indies for a paltry 85 runs only.

They themselves are to be blamed for the situation in which they are in now. They have the best batsmen in their line up from Sehwag, Sourav, Dravid, Sachin,Yuvraj and Dhoni who can do their job easy. Looking at the schedule, no body should have thought that India will be in such darkness in so early part of the tournament. But , never mind. They need to go ahead for the sake 100million fans who are supporting them and giving them inspiration to march forward. They should go all out and blast Sri lanka away. Vaas and Malinga and later Murali, they need to be careful initially. Jayasuriya and Sangakkara should be kept in check and bowlers must bowl wicket to wicket, no width at all. Whole of India will be praying for an Indian win. I am sure we will come out victorious. Tomorrow we should enjoy watching a fantastic contest between bat and ball. That’s why cricket is so popular in India. But we should not consider as our religion and should not think our cricketers as God. If India wins the toss, should bowl first and keep Srilanka in check within 225 and get the runs as quickly as possible. Kumble should bowl well to get some wickets and keep batsmen in check. Agarkar is not that impressive. They should opt for Zaheer, Munaf and Kerala express Sreesanth who may be expensive, but can be penetrative. Hope they consider this aspect as well. Zaheer need to bowl well and Munaf also.
Me: I think Indians have fly back home.

Bangal Tigers Bang The Indians

Indian defeat

India left themselves with a mountain to climb in the 2007 Cricket World Cup after their five-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh at the Queen’s Park Oval here on Saturday. The result of this game means that their match against Sri Lanka on Friday next is a virtual final – at this early stage of the tournament. It was an all-round letdown by the Indians, made worse by the fact that first and foremost, they let themselves down and did no justice to their talent and potential. This is a team capable of playing far better cricket than they put on show on Saturday, and skipper Rahul Dravid was later moved to calling it “one of the worst days in my 11-year long international career”.The way India batted – after winning the toss, mind you – belied the fact that they have three men with over 10,000 runs each in one-day international cricket in their ranks. In contrast, the three Bangladesh batsmen who built the win were all teenagers, opener Tamim Iqbal (17), Mushfiqur Rahim (19) and Sakib Al Hasan (19).Yet, it was an outstanding performance with the ball by Mashrafe Mortaza who finished with 4 for 38 to really set up this huge win for Bangladesh. On the day the nation observed the birthday of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman, the assassinated founder President of Bangladesh, the sub-continental side joined Ireland (celebrating St Patrick’s Day) on the list of giant-killers at this tournament. For the record, the Irish have sent Pakistan tumbling out of the tournament with a shock win and made a strong case for themselves in the Super Eights. Here in Port of Spain, Bangladesh played much the better cricket to run out deserving winners. Chasing 192 to win, they put forward a composed effort all the way and at no stage looked flustered or hurried as they ran the target down. Close to 12 dot balls went by before Rahim slashed the winning boundary off Munaf Patel.Dravid’s choice to bat first was the first shock of the day. His captaincy too was patchy, much like India’s overall performance and he let Bangladesh off the hook on more than one occasion, especially early on with Munaf having earned a breakthrough. After the decision at the toss, the second shock came in the form of Mortaza’s blistering pace and raw aggression that shook up the top order. Thereafter, with Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh in a retrieving partnership and just as India looked like they were headed for the safety of a 220-plus score, they fell apart again. After Mortaza and Syed Rasel had pegged the Indians back, it was the turn of the spinners to step up and play their part. Mohammad Rafique is a crafty campaigner and he received superb support from fellow left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak who landed a telling blow by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar early in the Indian innings.Ganguly and Yuvraj looked like they were pulling India out of the fire but their successive departures and a late order collapse that saw five wickets fall in the space of 14 balls and two runs scored was too much of a handicap to overcome. In the Bangladesh reply, it was a spirited blast by Tamim, who smashed a blistering 51 from just 53 deliveries that got the side off to a flier. He first took on Zaheer Khan, clouting India’s spearhead for 15 runs in an over as runs came at a hectic pace and then turned his sights on Ajit Agarkar, who will be disappointed at the way he bowled..Tamim drove and cut with assurance and authority, blasting two sixes besides seven fours before he was claimed caught behind by Munaf Patel. Even as the mayhem was on at the other end, wicketkeeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim played the anchor to perfection. He batted with calm authority to remain not only unbeaten at the end, but to also take the honour of hitting the winning runs. Rahim’s 56 came from 107 deliveries and contained three boundaries and two well-timed sixes.Sakib Al Hasan too played a key role in the Bangladesh win, stroking his way to an 81-ball 53 before he was stumped off Virender Sehwag.India now need to get their act together fast. Bermuda are next, so that should give the Boys in Blue the opportunity to compose themselves before the crunch game against Sri Lanka. For that to happen, Dravid will have to assert himself much more than he did on Saturday. He will also have to take a call on Sehwag who did his own case no good by falling cheaply and with no signs indicating that he is indeed coming out of his extendedrun-famine.
